Preparing for Clinical Placement

Clinical Placement

First placement is second semester year one (NURS 1020). Clinical courses are incorporated with a theory course (ex. NURS 1002 and NURS 1020). Clinical courses include labs as well.

NURS 1020H: 1 day a week, 6-hour placement within a long-term care home and/or a retirement community. 2 hours a week in the Clinical Learning Centre for laboratories and simulation.

NURS 2020H: two 8 hour shifts per week with a placement agency and one 1 hour seminar a week with their clinical faculty instructor working to develop a project for their agency. (Local opportunities and international opportunities -Honduras)

NURS 2021H: one, 12-hour shift per week with the placement agency in either a maternal/child setting or in an inpatient mental health unit. 2 hours a week in the Clinical Learning Centre for laboratories and simulation.

NURS 3020H: two, 8 hours shifts per week with one 2 hour session per week in the Clinical Learning Centre.

NURS 3021H: two, 8-hour shifts per week (compressed students will have two, 12-hour shifts in a compressed semester) with one, 2-hour session (compressed students will have two, 2-hour sessions per week) in the Clinical Learning Centre.

NURS 4000s: Pre-consolidation and consolidation. Students will be independently placed with an RN (preceptor) at an agency and complete approximately 300 hours of clinical practice time.

Math Test Prep

You will be required to successfully complete a math test for each clinical placement. You will taught the math content in your first semester NURS 1550 course seminars.

Textbooks

For financial reasons, buying second hand may be the better option (confirm it is the RIGHT textbook). E-textbooks are also useful and less expensive (hard to resell). Check the library as well. Sharing textbooks with peers is also an option (think of possible problems). Try not to buy books TOO in advance as professors may change the book closer to the start of classes. Some professors may provide alternatives for the required textbooks (an older version). Email professors prior to classes to confirm.

Course Fees

Nursing courses may require additional courses to be taken, such NonViolent Crisis Interventions (NVCI) for NURS 2021 ($30) and Gentle Persuasive Approach (GPA) for NURS 1002 ($80)

Non-Academic Requirements

You will need to be complete and update your NARs on an ongoing basis while enrolled in the program. Appropriate documentation proving completion and/or renewal of those requirements must be submitted by the specified deadline for each term you are in clinical. This documentation will include items such as health documentation, immunization information and required certifications.

Failure to complete, renew and/or supply the appropriate documentation for any non-academic requirement by the specified deadline will result in denial of entry to clinical placements and will result in withdrawal from the clinical placement and associated theory courses.
