TFSON Committee Positions

Appeals Committee

The purpose of the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing Appeals Committee is to review student appeals related to disputed academic decisions, determine the outcome of the appeal, and recommend sanctions where indicated.

Academic decisions which may be appealed by a student include: In course grades; final grades; clinical failures; findings of professional misconduct.

Awards Committee

The committee shall be responsible for, but not limited to, the following functions:

Publication of available prizes, awards, and scholarships in a timely manner, easily accessed by students and faculty (Information in publication shall include the criteria for selection, the process for application/nomination, and the deadline for applications).

Evaluation of applicants for awards administered through the school of nursing vis a vis established criteria and selection of recipients for annual awards (bursaries and some awards based upon financial need are administered by the Registrar’s office and do not come under the prevue of this committee).

Review the terms of reference, award selection criteria, and award application process annually and revise as necessary.

Plan and conduct an event to present awards to the selected recipients in the spring of each year.

Liaise with Development Office and External Relations and Advancement Office as necessary.

The committee makes Reports to the School Council at least annually.

Curriculum & Evaluation Committee

The purpose of this committee is to monitor, evaluate and guide curriculum development for the TFSON. The work of the Curriculum and Evaluation committee (CEC) supports the teaching and learning philosophy, aims and activities of the TFSON. The school is undertaking the development of a new curriculum over the next two years. This is an exciting time for this committee.

Functions:

Review recommendations regarding course delivery, course credit, and timing of courses within the curriculum and make recommendations when required.

Provide feedback to faculty regarding proposals for substantive changes to courses and/or new courses.

Develop, maintain, and administer the curriculum evaluation process.

Provide recommendations to faculty related to findings of the curriculum evaluation process.

Review applications for courses to be cross-listed with TFSON.

Review textbooks and electronic products that may span across years of the curriculum.

Assess the need for curricular change and recommend a strategic process.

Policy Committee

Functions:

The B.Sc.N. Student Handbook on an annual basis.

Review the Preceptor Handbooks on an annual basis.

Review all polices on a regular, scheduled basis.

Consider proposals for changes to policies based on student and course evaluation feedback.

The committee makes its recommendations to the School Council for relevant policy changes, complying with Trent University Academic policies and procedures, student rights and responsibilities and the College of Nurses of Ontario’s standards

Research, Ethics, and Scholarly Activities Committee

The purpose of this committee is to promote research, ethics, and scholarly activities within the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing.

In keeping with the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing’s Academic Plan, the functions of the Research, Ethics, and Scholarly Activities Committee are:

To foster faculty research productivity.

To provide consultation regarding research and ethics, in advance of proposal submissions in particular.

In accordance with the Trent University Senate Policy on Research (http://www.trentu.ca/administration/pdfs/ResearchInvolvingHumanParticipants_001.pdf), this committee will conduct a departmental ethics review of course-related, non-funded, minimal risk, undergraduate student research.

In accordance with the Trent University Senate Policy on Research (http://www.trentu.ca/administration/pdfs/ResearchInvolvingHumanParticipants_001.pdf), by May 30th of each year, this committee will provide the Trent University REB a report of the research proposals reviewed and decisions made during each year.

To cultivate moral engagement in research and scholarly activities.

To disseminate knowledge about the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans.
